Striations
paintings Inspired by an emotional trip to Page, arizona
I visited one of the most beautiful place I have ever been, Page Arizona, while grieving the end of my father’s life. As I explored Antelope Canyon, Lake Powell, and Horseshoe Bend with my partner and his family, I knew my dad — with his love for geology — would have loved the strange, striated landscape. As I painted long brush strokes recounting sandstone and clouds, I felt like I was describing this beautiful piece of Earth to my dad in the spirit world.
GLOW
16"x20" • acrylic on canvas • $850
This painting depicts the famous glow within Antelope Canyon, a slot canyon in Page AZ. Within Antelope Canyon the elements are rearranged in a surprising way — Earth flows like water, in the colors of fire. The colors are warm but the air is cooler and quieter than outside the canyon. It’s a beautiful, special place unlike any I’ve been to before.
DIVIDE
16"x20" • acrylic on canvas • $850
Any trip to Page, Arizona necessarily includes a trip to Horseshoe Bend. To me, the most interesting part of the view was the river that divides the canyon — a testament to water’s ability to slowly create dramatic change over time.
TOWER
16"x20" • acrylic on canvas • $850
On the way to Page, the landscape outside the car window got more and more surreal. Towers of rippling sandstone loomed out of a dense fog. In this painting I exaggerated the twisting and turning of the land, but only to capture the emotional weight of such an alien landscape.
STORM
16"x20" • acrylic on canvas • $850
A storm in Arizona creates a very dramatic, swirling sky. While the painting is dark, the circle at the top is actually the sun, not the moon. The enveloping and dynamic darkness of the sky reflected the grief and uncertainty I was carrying during my trip. One thing I enjoy about visiting and painting nature is that big, scary feelings can be held and represented in a way that is beautiful.
PASSAGE
16"x20" • acrylic on canvas • $850
As we drove from Albuquerque to Page, I saw storms over many landforms. The storms were so localized that bands of sunlight sometimes highlighted certain features, as if nature was calling my attention to them specifically. I knew these mesas were calling out to be painted.
SPIRAL
16"x20" • acrylic on canvas • $850
For this painting I started with a classic Southwestern landscape — blue cloudy sky over red rocks above sage covered sand — and imagined how it would look swirling and spiraling.
REST
16"x20" • acrylic on canvas • $850
My boyfriend’s family and I saw this stunning sunset while waiting outside a restaurant for our number to be called. It was a beautiful reminder that life’s joys often happen when we are waiting for something else. We waited for about twenty minutes and were able to see the sun set completely, while enjoying a light conversation and feeling the desert breeze.
WALLFACE
16"x20" • acrylic on canvas • $850
I saw this cliff face from a family boat ride on Lake Powell, a strange place where a twisting body of water is surrounded by slabs of sandstone. The sky was very blue, which reflected in the water, which reflected back onto the rock. It was another place in Page where the elements are rearranged in a surprising, disorienting way.
ALIEN
16"x20" • acrylic on canvas • $850
Near Horseshoe Canyon there are sandstone formations that appear to be sliced, almost like diced potatoes. These bands formed over time as one sediment layer solidified over the next, and then were battered by wind, water, and heat. What remains looks like a landscape from Mars, an almost gooey arrangement of stone.
Dream
16"x20" • acrylic on canvas • $850
On the way home from Page to Albuquerque, the skies were calmer. The morning light was very gentle. As the land became more familiar and soothing, I was lulled into wondering whether the surprising and alien landscapes of Page were just a dream. Then when I got home, I enjoyed bringing them back to life through my paintings.
